A Breakfast for Champions
You’ve heard it before, that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but do you know why? Well, it helps prevent weight gain, boosts short-term memory, and even makes us happier and ready to start the day. The trick however, is to make sure your breakfast is somewhat healthy or you can kiss all the great benefits goodbye.
A full balanced breakfast provides you with complex carbohydrates, fiber, protein, and a small amount of fat. This typically includes:
- Whole grains: whole-grain rolls, bagels, cereal, English muffins, waffles, and pancakes
- Low-fat dairy: milk, yogurt low in sugar, and low-fat cheeses
- Lean protein: eggs, lean meat, legumes, and nuts
- Fruits and vegetables: fresh or frozen options, 100% juice drinks without added sugar, and fruit and vegetable smoothies
If you eat a proper breakfast, you should feel full for a while and not longing for your next meal a half hour after eating. Portion sizes depend on your age, activity level, and general eating habits, but the general guideline is 25% protein, 25% carbohydrates, and 50% fruits and/or vegetables. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t force yourself to eat if you aren’t hungry upon waking up. This could actually cause you to gain weight in the long run.
At The Committed Pig, we offer a variety of healthy eating options to our customers. You can always swap out hash browns or French fires for a side salad, ask for wheat toast, or simply skip the bacon on the side. Just ask your server what we can do to make your meal perfect!
